| Can coughing up bloody phlegm be caused by a weekend of smoking on a regular basis? I am a social smoker who has been doing so for about 10 years. In day to day smoking it ranges between 1 -2 a day. This weekend I smoked about 6 in a 48 hour period. Went to bed feeling like a sore thoat was coming on and this morning hocked up a chunk of sputum with a hunk of a blood in it. Should I be worried, or is this just my lungs trying to expel the crap from the weekend? |

One thing you need to learn if you are going to be a Dr..... be careful how you talk to people or what you tell them because you can really scare them especially if their situation is not as serious as what you may think. Now to answer the question. I talked to my brother who is a casual smoker too and is a nurse. He said that this happens to him too and happens to many casual smokers. It is quite common. Your airways are just irritated and a bit dry. So when you cough, you break tiny vessels and blood is transferred into your sputum. Does not sound like you have too much to worry about unless you are coughing up large blood clots with or without tissue. Hope this has relieved you of any fear that Cokslapa may have brought on to you. |
| Why does Black smoke come from my Hero Honda Hunk's exhaust pipe? I use a Hero Honda Hunk which is 11 months old which has done 8000 km. This is for the second time I observed black smoke from the exhaust pipe. I complained about that previously when I gave the bike for scheduled service. | Your bike is just running rich. Check you sparkplugs and if they are black you may want to change them. If the smoke clears up after the bike warms up then I wouldn't worry to much about it. |

PHYSICAL DEPENDENCE: This is the side of addiction your body and the chemical reations in it deal with. It's the impulsive craving one's brain and central nervous system has for the stimulant the drug has in it. You can know if you are physically dependent on a drug if you experience withdrawal symptoms (intense physical cravings) when not reguarily using. The reason drugs like heroin and meth are so hard to quit is because they are very, very physically stimulating. Smoking a cigarette, for example, releases a stimulant called nicotine into your blood stream where it then binds to receptors in your brain. These receptors set of a chain reaction that release adrenaline, a stimulating hormone, into the blood stream, giving you a slight rush. The time between inhaling the smoke and adrenaline rush is eight seconds. MARIJUANA AND PHYSICAL DEPENDENCY: Pot is not a very physically addictive drug because of the slow rate at which your body removes it. THC metabolites (what THC leaves behind) are stored in fat cells but also have a low water solubility (doesn't dissolve/break apart easy in water). Your body is mostly water and fat cells are strong, making the THC metabolites hard to remove. The slow removal process usually means the absense of ANY withdrawal symptoms. Absense of withdrawal symptoms means an absense of any physical dependency. However, there is another kind of dependency: PSYCHOLOGICAL DEPENDENCE: This is the addiction that we learn about in school, not so much in chemistry class like above. When you experience and emotional/psychological addiction for a drug, it shows not in your blood stream but in your life: Most decisions you make and thoughts you have will revolve around aquiring or using the drug. People will often loose money, friends, jobs, or respect because of their despiration to experience the drug. Frequent use of the drug to avoid doing not-so fun tasks or relieve stress can also classify a psychological dependency. However, most people who are emotionally dependent on a drug will not admit to any of the above. Your relationship with pot is without a doubt in my mind an addiction. If you are spending all of your time thinking of, buying, wanting, and using the drug, that right there is the very definition. The really, really good news I have for you though is that you KNOW and ACCEPT that you have an abnormally high rate of use with pot. Ninety-nine out of a hundred people in this situation would deny that there is any problem with using pot this often, especially because of the popular myth that it is not addictive. With this thought in mind, I would suggest seeking professional help from a psychologist/psychiatrist to explore your emotional dependency with pot. Facing past events or learning new ways to cope with stress can greatly aide you in reducing your pot use and refresh your life. | Second hand smoke can be worse than first hand smoke. I would see a doctor about it. This time of year it can be allergies. Allergies cause a tickle in your throat and lots of coughing. There are allergy medications like Claritin that can be taken over the counter. |

| 1996 Buick Century using coolant like crazy, smoking from hood? I bought a 1996 Buick Century in a fit of desperation about January. Not too long after I got it, I noticed a funny smell. Well, that smell turned into smoke. Lots of smoke that comes from the hood of my car after it's been driven or when it idles for a little bit. Another thing I realized is that smell I mentioned earlier was anti-freeze/coolant. My car uses coolant like crazy (2-3+ bottles a week). One moron mechanic said it could be my head trying to blow. Another stated that the intake manifold was made out of plastic at that time and has most likely gone bad. What I'm wondering is how do I, myself, repair this as simply and as cheap as possible without furthering any damage? I just need this hunk of crap to last me until I can get a better job (hopefully before the beginning of May). |
| You most likely have a failed intake gasket which is letting your coolant leak out. They fail where the coolant passage is near the end of the manifold in the "v". This is a common problem on these vehicles, the original gaskets they used were not that tough. The only way to fix it is to take it apart and install new gaskets. If you don't have a good set of tools and a fair amount of mechanical experience, this is best left to professionals. |

Tim passed away in August of '89 of the disease.. Many fans blamed NASCAR for the way things happened, but it could have been avoided if Tim had been more forthright about his problem..
